Of course I made a book-thing, there’s so much information to filter and push back on papers, all those artists traveling to this too-beautiful town to have experiences and make works and leave one work behind. Which one? Probably the least favourite, we all do that, the little devil in our big ego, but I didn’t want to make that stupid choice, I didn’t want to feel guilty, bitter or nasty, so I made two of everything (imperfect copies of each other) and then I put together two dossiers of sorts and Martina chose one to keep for the archive of Salzburg’s Artist in Residence Program.
excerpt from the text in the two books I made during AiR
Salzburg has been, at times, an overwhelming experience, and my work is a reflection of that. I’ve seen art, old and contemporary, I’ve met people, locals and migrants from my own country, I’ve cooked food and shared it, I’ve been to museums and memorials, and only scratched the surface. I felt like a professional tourist, I felt welcomed. I’ve made drawings and took notes on the burning of the books, the liberation by the rainbow, the concentration camp, the women’s vote, the sadness of Mozart, the performance of Paracelsus, the impostor’s syndrome, being creative on a budget, and mostly about artists’ motions, their state of mind, insecurities, misconceptions, blind spots, relation to fame, need for validation and so on. During my stay I’ve made two book-like works, one the imperfect copy of the other, one for me, and one for AiR Salzburg.
